Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
KaafHaYa'aeenSaad. 1 (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). 2 When he cried unto his Lord a cry in secret, 3 saying: 'O my Lord, my bones are enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet, never Lord, have I been unblessed in prayer to You. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Yaqoub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased. 6 "Zachariah, We bring you good news of a son whose name shall be John. We have not given such a name to anyone before." 7 He said, "Lord, how can I have a son? My wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age". 8 Allah said: even so! Thy Lord saith: it is unto Me easy, whereas surely I created thee afore when thou wast not aught. 9 [Zachariah] prayed: "O my Sustainer! Appoint a sign for me!" Said [the angel]: "Thy sign shall be that for full three nights [and days] thou wilt not speak unto men". 10 So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon. 11 [And when the son was born and grew up, he was told,] "O John! Hold fast unto the divine writ with [all thy] strength!" - for We granted him wisdom while he was yet a little boy, 12 And tenderness from Us and purity, and he was one who guarded (against evil), 13 kind to his parents, not arrogant or a rebellious person. 14 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! 15
