The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 and defilement flee! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 And children present [with him] 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
