A company of the former peoples 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 neither cool nor good. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
