Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
