The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 And accepts the best, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And rejects the best, 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 But save him who fears 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
