Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
