Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
