The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 Of a related orphan, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
