The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And your garments do purify, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He planned and plotted. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then he looked, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
