In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. 5 Indeed getting up in the night is tougher, and the words flow with strength. 6 Indeed you have a lot of matters during the day. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the affluent ones who give the lie (to the Truth), and bear with them for a while. 11 We have fetters (for them) and a blazing fire, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment, 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 Then Fir'awn disobeyed the apostle, wherefore We laid hold of him with a painful hold. 16 If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed? 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
