The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
