The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 Dragging by the head, 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 who guard their privates 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors), 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
