a multitude of the ancients, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
