We sent a revelation to Moses saying, "Take away My servants by night and strike for them a dry path through the sea. Have no fear of being overtaken and do not be afraid." 77 Then Pharaoh followed them with his hosts and there covered them that which did cover them of the sea. 78 And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them]. 79 O children of Israel! indeed We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a covenant with you on the blessed side of the mountain, and We sent to you the manna and the quails. 80 "Partake of the good things which We have provided for you as sustenance, but do not transgress therein the bounds of equity lest My condemnation fall upon you: for, he upon whom My condemnation falls has indeed thrown himself into utter ruin!" 81 but to whosoever repents, believes and does good deeds, and is at last guided, I am Forgiving' 82 ۞ The Lord asked, "Moses, what made you attend your appointment with Me before your people?" 83 Moses replied: 'They are following me. My Lord, I made haste only so that I might please You' 84 (Allah) said: "Verily! We have tried your people in your absence, and As-Samiri has led them astray." 85 Moses returned to his people in anger and great sorrow. He said, "My people, did your Lord not make you a handsome promise? Was my absence too long for you? Did you desire that your Lord's wrath should descend upon you, when you broke your promise to me?" 86 They answered, "We did not break our promise to you of our own accord, but we had to carry loads of the people's ornaments and so we threw them [into the fire] for that was what the Samiri suggested," 87 Then he took out (of the fire) for them a statue of a calf which seemed to low. They said: "This is your ilah (god), and the ilah (god) of Musa (Moses), but [Musa (Moses)] has forgotten (his god).'" 88 Did they not see that it did not give them any answer, nor had it power to do them harm or bring them gain? 89
