۞ CLOSER DRAWS unto men their reckoning: and yet they remain stubbornly heedless [of its approach]. 1 Whenever there comes unto them any new reminder from their Sustainer, they but listen to it with playful amusement, 2 and their hearts are preoccupied with trivial matters. The unjust ones whisper to each other and say, "Is he (Muhammad) more than a mere mortal like you? How can you follow that which you know is only a magic?" 3 He said: "My Lord knows well all that is spoken in the heavens and the earth. He is All-Hearing, All- Knowing." 4 Rather they said, “These are confused dreams, but in fact he has fabricated it – but in fact he is a poet; so he must bring us some sign, like those who were sent before.” 5 Not one township that We destroyed before them believed. Would they, then, believe? 6 Before thee, also, the messengers We sent were but men, to whom We granted inspiration: If ye realise this not, ask of those who possess the Message. 7 And We did not make them bodies not eating the food, and they were not to abide (forever). 8 then We made true the promise We gave them and We delivered them, and whomsoever We would; and We destroyed the prodigal. 9 We have indeed sent down towards you a Book, in which is your repute; so do you not have sense? 10
