۞ AND, INDEED, long before [the time of Moses] We vouchsafed unto Abraham his consciousness of what is right; and We were aware of [what moved] him 51 When he said unto his father and his folk: What are these images unto which ye pay devotion? 52 They said, "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error." 54 They said: hast thou come unto us with the truth, or art thou of those who sport? 55 He answered: "Nay, but your [true] Sustainer is the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth - He who has brought them into being: and I am one of those who bear witness to this [truth]!" 56 I swear by God I will do something to your idols when you have turned your backs and gone." 57 Then he made them fragments, all except the big one of them, that haply unto it they may return. 58 (When they saw the idols in this state) they said: "Who has done this to our gods? Surely he is one of the wrong-doers." 59 Said some [of them]: "We heard a youth speak of these [gods with scorn]: he is called Abraham." 60 Their chiefs said, "Bring him before the eyes of the people and let them testify that he has spoken against the idols." 61 'Abraham' they said, 'was it you who did this to our gods' 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 So they returned one to another, and they said, 'Surely it is you who are the evildoers.' 64 Then they were made to hang down their heads: Certainly you know that they do not speak. 65 He said, 'What, and do you serve, apart from God, that which profits you nothing; neither hurts you? 66 Fie upon you and upon all that you worship instead of God! Will you not, then, use your reason?" 67 They said, 'Burn him, and help your gods, if you would do aught.' 68 We said: O fire! be a comfort and peace to Ibrahim; 69 And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. 70 for We saved him and Lot, [his brother's son, by guiding them] to the land which We have blessed for all times to come. 71 And We bestowed him Ishaq, and Yaqub the grandson; and We made all of them worthy of Our proximity. 72 And We made them leaders who guide by Our command, and We sent them the divine revelation to do good deeds and to keep the prayer established and to give charity; and they used to worship Us. 73 And (as for) Lut, We gave him wisdom and knowledge, and We delivered him from the town which wrought abominations; surely they were an evil people, transgressors; 74 And We admitted him into Our mercy. Verily he was of the righteous. 75
