Tell them the story of Abraham, 69 When he said unto his father and his people: what worship ye? 70 They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted unto them. 71 He said, “Do they hear you when you call?” 72 'Can they benefit you or harm you' 73 They said, "No, but our fathers worshipped them." 74 He said: have ye observed that which ye worship 75 "Ye and your fathers before you?- 76 "For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds; 77 He created me and He will guide me. 78 It is He who gives me food and drink 79 and when I fall ill, is the One who restores me to health, 80 And Who causeth me to die, then giveth me life (again), 81 and who I am eager shall forgive me my offence on the Day of Doom. 82 My Lord! Vouchsafe me wisdom and unite me to the righteous. 83 give me a good name among later generations; 84 And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Delight, 85 "And forgive my father - for, verily, he is among those who have gone astray 86 and do not put me to shame on the Day when all shall be raised from the dead: 87 the Day when nothing will avail, neither wealth nor offspring, 88 Unless it be he, who shall bring unto Allah a whole heart, 89 "To the righteous, the Garden will be brought near, 90 And hell will appear plainly to the erring. 91 And it will be said to them: "Where are those (the false gods whom you used to set up as rivals with Allah) that you used to worship 92 "'Besides Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?' 93 So they and all the astray were flung into hell. 94 and the hosts of Iblis - all together. 95 And they will say, and they will be quarrelling in it: 96 "By Allah, we were surely in clear error 97 when we made you equal with the Lord of the Worlds. 98 It was naught but the sinners that led us astray; 99 We have no one to intercede for us before God 100 no caring friend. 101 "'Now if we only had a chance of return we shall truly be of those who believe!'" 102 Surely, in that there is a sign, yet most of them do not believe. 103 Your Lord is certainly Majestic and All-merciful. 104
