Tell them the story of Abraham, 69 when he asked his father and his people: "What do you worship?" 70 They replied: "We worship idols and are devoted to them." 71 He asked them, "Can the idols hear you when you pray to them 72 "Or do they benefit you or do they harm (you)?" 73 They said: Nay, we found our fathers doing so. 74 He said: "Do you observe that which you have been worshipping, 75 you and those ancient forebears of yours? 76 "Now [as for me, I know that,] verily, these [false deities] are my enemies, [and that none is my helper] save the Sustainer of all the worlds, 77 Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me. 78 "And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink. 79 And heals me when I am sick, 80 He who will cause me to die and bring me back to life; 81 And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense." 82 [And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous. 83 And grant me an honourable mention in later generations; 84 And make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Delight. 85 And forgive my father; verily he is of the erring. 86 And disgrace me not on the day when they are raised 87 the Day when nothing will avail, neither wealth nor offspring, 88 But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart." 89 And Paradise will be brought near to the Muttaqun (pious - see V. 2:2). 90 And the hell shall be made manifest to the erring ones, 91 "And it shall be said to them: 'Where are the (gods) ye worshipped- 92 "Instead of Allah? Can they help you or (even) help themselves?" 93 And they will be pitched into it, they and the perverse 94 and the hosts of Iblis, all together. 95 "They will say there in their mutual bickerings: 96 By Allah, of a truth we were in error manifest 97 when we made you equal with the Lord of the Universe. 98 It was the evildoers who led us astray, 99 and we have no intercessors now, 100 nor a loving friend. 101 If only we could return and be among the believers!" 102 Indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 103 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 104
