(The tribe of) A’ad denied the Noble Messengers. 123 When their brother Hood said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 124 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you; 125 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 126 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Do you build monuments on every high place in vanity, 128 "And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever. 129 "And when ye exert your strong hand, do ye do it like men of absolute power? 130 So fear you God, and obey you me; 131 Have fear of Him Who has provided you with all the (good) things you know; 132 "He has aided you with cattle and children. 133 And gardens and watersprings. 134 indeed, I fear for you the torment of an awful day." 135 They said: It is all one to us whether thou preachest or art not of those who preach; 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 And we shall not be doomed. 138 So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
