The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
