Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 In gardens and springs. 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said, “This is the she-camel – one day shall be her turn to drink, and on the other appointed day, shall be your turn.” 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
