And assuredly We sent Musa with Our signs unto Fir'awn and his chiefs, and he said: verily I am an apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 but when We relieved them of the torment, they broke their word. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]. 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples. 56
