Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
