Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
HA MIM. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
