The Mountain (Al-Toor)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER Mount Sinai! 1 by the book (Torah) written 2 In parchment spread open 3 Consider the long-enduring house [of worship]! 4 By the Canopy Raised High; 5 and by the swelling ocean, 6 Verily the torment of thine Lord is sure to befalls 7 Of it there is no averter. 8 On the day when the heaven will heave with (awful) heaving, 9 The mountains move and fly away, 10 Woe will be to those who rejected the Truth 11 and amuse themselves with vain argumentation. 12 The day when they are thrust with a (disdainful) thrust, into the fire of hell 13 This is the fire which you used to give the lie to. 14 Is this, then, any feat of magic or are you unable to see? 15 Roast in it! And bear you patiently, or bear not patiently, equal it is to you; you are only being recompensed for that you were working.' 16 Surely those who guard (against evil) shall be in gardens and bliss 17 Rejoicing because of what their Lord gave them, and their Lord saved them from the punishment of the burning fire. 18 'Eat and drink, with wholesome appetite, for that you were working. 19 Reclining upon couches ranged in rows; and We shall espouse them to wide-eyed houris. 20 The offspring of the believers will also follow them to Paradise. So shall We join their offspring to them because of their faith. We shall reduce nothing from their deeds. Everyone will be responsible for his own actions. 21 And We will aid them with fruit and flesh such as they desire. 22 They will exchange cups of wine free of (incitement to) pleasantry or sin. 23 ۞ And they will be waited upon by [immortal] youths, [as if they were children] of their own, [as pure] as if they were pearls hidden in their shells. 24 And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other. 25 Saying: Lo! of old, when we were with our families, we were ever anxious; 26 God has been gracious to us and has saved us from the torment of Hell's intense heat -- 27 Surely we called upon Him before: Surely He is the Benign, the Merciful. 28
