These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
