The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
