The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 who guard their privates 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
