The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A requester seeks the punishment that will take place – 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
