In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you (Prophet Muhammad) wrapped, 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 or add to it a little; and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Indeed, the first part of night is heavier in tread, and more upright in speech. 6 Indeed you have a lot of matters during the day. 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little, 11 We have fetters (for them) and a blazing fire, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment, 13 upon the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains become a slipping heap of sand. 14 Verily, We have sent to you (O men) a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) to be a witness over you, as We did send a Messenger [Musa (Moses)] to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed? 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
