The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 purify your garments; 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
