The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise and give warning! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
