The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And all abomination shun! 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then looked he, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 For We have caused none but angelic powers to lord over the fire [of hell]; and We have not caused their number to be aught but a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth - to the end that they who have been granted revelation aforetime might be convinced [of the truth of this divine writ]; and that they who have attained to faith [in it] might grow yet more firm in their faith; and that [both] they who have been granted the earlier revelation and they who believe [in this one] might be freed of all doubt; and that they in whose hearts is disease and they who deny the truth outright might ask, "What does [your] God mean by this parable?" In this way God lets go astray him that wills [to go astray,] and guides aright him that wills [to be guided]. And none can comprehend thy Sustainers forces save Him alone: and all this is but a reminder to mortal man. 31
