The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 arise and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 and who still desires more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
