He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 You neglect. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olives and palms 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and herbage 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
True are the words of God the Almighty.
