Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
