Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the daybreak, 1 And the ten nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 Serene soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Join My servants. 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
