The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
