Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
