The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
