The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By oath of the sun and its light 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 By the soul, and That which shaped it 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when the most corrupt of them incited them (to commit evil). 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 14 And for Him is no fear of its consequences. 15
