The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 And affirms goodness, 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And rejects the best, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
