The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
