AND UNTO [the tribe of] Thamud [We sent] their brother salih He said: "O my people! Worship God alone: you have no deity other than Him. Clear evidence of the truth has now come unto you from your Sustainer. "This she-camel belonging to God shall be a token for you: so leave her alone to pasture on God's earth, and do her no harm, lest grievous chastisement befall you. 73 Remember when He made you successors to the 'Ad and settled you in the land. You built palaces on its plains and carved houses out of the mountains. Remember God's blessings and do not spread corruption in the land," 74 but the arrogant leaders of his people said to the believers who were deemed weak, "Do you know for certain that Salih is one sent from his Lord?" They replied, "We believe in the message which has been sent through him." 75 The arrogant leaders said, "We reject what you believe in." 76 (Then) they hamstrung the shecamel and defied the order of their Lord, saying to Salih: 'Bring down that which you have promised us if you truly are one of the Messengers' 77 So the earthquake seized them, and morning found them in their habitation fallen prostrate. 78 Saleh turned away from them and said: "O my people, I conveyed to you the message of my Lord and warned you; but you do not like those who wish you well." 79 We also (sent) Lut: He said to his people: "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? 80 You engage in lustful activities with people instead of women. You have become transgressing people. 81 But his people's only answer was this: "Expel them from your land! Verily, they are folk who make themselves out to be pure!" 82 But we saved him and his family, except his wife: she was of those who legged behind. 83 And We rained down upon them a rain; so behold thou, how was the end of the sinners! 84
