Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician 109 who wants to drive you out of your land! " [Said Pharaoh:] "What, then, do you advise?" 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 To bring each knowing wizard unto thee. 112 And the sorcerers came to Pharaoh, saying, 'We shall surely have a wage, if we should be the victors?' 113 He said: yea! and verily ye shall be of those brought nigh. 114 They said: "O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 We put it into Moses's mind by inspiration: "Throw (now) thy rod": and behold! it swallows up straight away all the falsehoods which they fake! 117 ۞ So the truth was established, and what they did became null. 118 Thus they were overcome and made to look abject. 119 And the magicians were obliged to fall prostrate. 120 and said, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron. 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 Surely I shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. Then I shall crucify you every one. 124 They said: Lo! We are about to return unto our Lord! 125 You only take revenge on us because we believed in the Lord when we saw His miracles. Lord, grant us patience and let us die Muslims (submitted to God)." 126
