The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 by the moon when it follows the sun, 2 By the Day as it shows up (the Sun's) glory; 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel). 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
