They ask you about Dhu'l-Qarnain. 83 Say: "I will cite before you his commemoration." We gave him authority in the land and means of accomplishing every end. 84 and so he chose the right means [in whatever he did]. 85 Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water. And he found near it a people. We (Allah) said (by inspiration): "O Dhul-Qarnain! Either you punish them, or treat them with kindness." 86 He said: "We will chastise him who does wrong, whereafter he will be returned to his Lord and He will chastise him grievously. 87 And as for him who believes and does good, he shall have goodly reward, and We will speak to him an easy word of Our command. 88 Then followed he (another) way, 89 [And then he marched eastwards] till, when he came to the rising of the sun he found that it was rising on a people for whom We had provided no coverings against it: 90 Thus. And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge. 91 Then he followed still another path, 92 Till, when he came between the two mountains, he found upon their hither side a folk that scarce could understand a saying. 93 They said: O Dhu'l-Qarneyn! Lo! Gog and Magog are spoiling the land. So may we pay thee tribute on condition that thou set a barrier between us and them? 94 He said: "(The power) in which my Lord has established me is better (than tribute): Help me therefore with strength (and labour): I will erect a strong barrier between you and them: 95 Bring me blocks of iron; until when he had filled up the space between the two mountain sides, he said: Blow, until when he had made it (as) fire, he said: Bring me molten brass which I may pour over it. 96 And thus [the rampart was built, and] their enemies were unable to scale it, and neither were they able to pierce it. 97 He said: "This is a mercy from my Lord: But when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will make it into dust; and the promise of my Lord is true." 98 ۞ And on that day We will leave a part of them in conflict with another part, and the trumpet will be blown, so We will gather them all together; 99 That will be the Day We shall place Hell before the unbelievers 100 (Unbelievers) whose eyes had been under a veil from remembrance of Me, and who had been unable even to hear. 101
