When We said to the angels, "Prostrate yourselves to Adam", they prostrated themselves, but not Iblis: he refused. 116 Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. 117 Verily it is thine that thou shalt not hunger therein nor go naked. 118 nor face thirst or scorching heat." 119 Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered to him, saying: "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?" 120 They both ate the fruit of this tree, and so they became conscious of their nakedness and began to cover themselves with the leaves of the Garden. Thus Adam disobeyed his Lord and fell into error. 121 Thereafter his Lord chose him, and turned again unto him, and He guided him. 122 saying: "Down with you all from this [state of innocence, and be henceforth] enemies unto one another! None the less, there shall most certainly come unto you guidance from Me: and he who follows My guidance will not go astray, and neither will he be unhappy. 123 Whoever ignores My guidance will live a woeful life and will be brought in Our presence blind on the Day of Judgment. 124 and he will ask, "Lord, why have You raised me up blind, while I possessed sight before?" 125 God shall say, 'Even so it is. Our signs came unto thee, and thou didst forget them; and so today thou art forgotten.' 126 Thus We requite him who trespasseth and believeth not in the signs of his Lord, and surely the torment of the Hereafter is most severe and most lasting. 127 Is it not a guidance to them, how many generations We destroyed before them in whose dwelling-places they walk? Surely in that are signs for men possessing reason. 128
