۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 Recall what time he said unto his father and his people: what are these images to which ye are cleaving? 52 They answered: "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error." 54 They asked: "Hast thou come unto us [with this claim] in all earnest - or art thou one of those jesters?" 55 He said: "Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them and of that I am one of the witnesses. 56 And, by Allah! I will certainly do something against your idols after you go away, turning back. 57 So he broke them to pieces, (all) except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it. 58 They said: "Who has done this to our aliha (gods)? He must indeed be one of the wrong-doers." 59 They said: We heard a youth make mention of them, who is called Abraham. 60 "Bring him before the people," they said, "that they may bear witness." 61 They said: art thou the one who hath wrought this unto our gods, O Ibrahim? 62 He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." 63 And so they turned upon one another, saying, "Behold, it is you who are doing wrong." 64 Then they were utterly put to confusion saying, 'Very well indeed thou knowest these do not speak.' 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 Woe to you for what you worship instead of God. Have you no understanding?" 67 They said: "Burn him, and save your gods, if you are men of action." 68 [But] We said: O fire! Be thou cool, and [a source of] inner peace for Abraham!" 69 And they wished to cause him harm, so We made them the greatest of losers. 70 for We saved him and Lot, [his brother's son, by guiding them] to the land which We have blessed for all times to come. 71 And We gave him Ishaq and Yaqoub, a son's son, and We made (them) all good. 72 And We made them into leaders to guide people in accordance with Our command, and We inspired them to good works, and to establish Prayers and to give Zakah. They worshipped Us alone. 73 And We gave Lut the kingdom and knowledge, and We rescued him from the township that committed vile deeds; indeed those evil people were disobedient. 74 And We admitted him into Our mercy. Indeed, he was of the righteous. 75
