The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
